Norman Manea published an important article about Mircea Eliade, "Happy Guilt," in the August 5, 1991 edition of the New Republic. Unfortunately, the article is no longer available in the journal's online archive. I just read it in his collection of essays, The Fifth Impossibility: Essays on Exile and Language (Yale University Press, 2012).

Despite having lived outside Romania since 1986, Romanian writer Norman Manea has never ceased to write in Romanian. In fact, he published all his books in Romanian. Norman Manea was born in 1936 in Suceava. He was deported by the Romanian fascist authorities to a concentration camp and returned to Romania in 1945 with his the surviving members of his family. He studied engineering at the Construction Institute in Bucharest. His first work was published in a short-lived, avant-garde magazine, Povestea Vorbii. But while Norman Manea’s book is in many ways a memoir, it is also a deeply imaginative work, traversing time and place, life and literature, dream and reality, past and present.
